Number don’t lie! A $1,761,602.00 purse, 137 boats entered, two new tournament records and six solid days of fishing, fun and camaraderie… those were the numbers that defined the 2009 Mid-Atlantic $500,000. This is a tournament that continues to grow and get better with each passing year. As one participant so aptly put it last year, “We can fish any tournament, but this is more than a tournament, this is the Mid-Atlantic!”
Last year’s big money fish was a tournament record 95 pound white marlin brought to the scales by Scott Steele’s Topless. John Raimondo’s Sea Mistress and Mark & Amy Granville-Smith’s Phat Mann tied for second with respectable 78 pound whites, while four additional boats won calcutta money in the white marlin category. Sonny Falcone’s Cookie II took all of the blue marlin money, and Charlie Duerr’s Sea Hag went home with the top tuna money. Adam Glushakow’s boat, Predator landed the second heaviest tuna and there was a three way tie for third heaviest tuna between Bob Belansen’s Beast, Peter Cherasia’s Shark Byte, and Jeffrey Scanelli’s April Fool. The final $20,000 was split between Mike Ackley’s Foray for his heaviest dolphin and Bill Gallo’s Joanna for their tournament record 97 pound Wahoo.
This summer, prior to the tournament, we were walking the docks at Sunset Marina and asked one Captain if they were going to fish the Mid-Atlantic. “Hell yes,” he exclaimed, “Nobody spreads the money around like you guys!” Face it; there are only two kinds of big game tournament anglers, those who fish the Mid-Atlantic and those who want to!
Remember, numbers don’t lie!
